Lillian Yau tells stories in real time.
By day, she is a video producer with The Salvation Army Australia. By night (and many weekends), she works as a freelance multi-camera director, capturing the energy and unpredictability of live productions across arts, sports and corporate events.
Her path into the control room began in front of the camera as a newsreader on Channel 31’s Viva Melbourne, before moving behind the scenes as a Directors’ Assistant in Channel 10 for Ten News. Since then, she has directed concert broadcasts featuring Australia’s major symphony orchestras and continues to freelance in the fast-paced world of live production across arts, sports and corporate.
Running quietly alongside her career is a project decades in the making. In 2000, while still a film student, Lillian began filming three fifth-year medical students. That footage has grown into Dear Med Student — a rare 25-year longitudinal documentary following their lives, careers and calling over time.
She is drawn to stories about purpose, people and the long journey between where we begin and where we end up.
